Tang Dao
「一身轉戰三千里,一劍曾當百萬師。」 "Fighting across three thousand miles single-handedly;
One sword was once worth a million soldiers."
— Wang Wei (Tang Dynasty)
The Tang Dao: The Ancestor of the Katana
Before the curve of the Katana defined the Samurai, the straight edge of the Tang Dao (唐刀) ruled the East. Originating from China's Golden Age—the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD)—this legendary straight sword traveled across the sea to Japan, becoming the direct prototype of the Samurai sword (Chokuto).
Known for its narrow, straight, single-edged blade and long handle, the Tang Dao is a masterpiece of speed, penetration, and imperial aesthetic. It bridges the gap between Chinese heritage and Samurai tradition, offering a unique "Tactical Elegance" that is unmatched in history.
Why Collect a Tang Dao?
- ♦ The "Chokuto" Profile: Unlike the curved Katana, the Tang Dao is strictly straight. This geometry optimizes it for piercing armor and lightning-fast draws.
- ♦ High-Performance Steel: Our collection features T10 Clay Tempered Steel for a genuine, vibrant Hamon, and Folded Damascus Steel for stunning visual patterns reminiscent of flowing silk.
- ♦ Tactical Beauty: With its straight scabbard and long handle, it exudes a modern, almost minimalist tactical vibe while remaining deeply rooted in history.
Forged for the Golden Age
At Shogun Blade, we recreate the glory of the Tang Empire. Every Tang Dao is hand-forged, fully functional, and built with a Full Tang construction. Whether displayed in an executive office or used for heavy forms practice, these blades command respect.
*Craftsmanship Note: Due to the traditional hand-forging process, the grain of the folded steel and the wave of the Hamon are unique to each individual sword.
